Healthcare Updates: A Monthly Review Checklist

A repeatable monthly routine for reviewing official healthcare notices and turning relevant changes into assigned action.

By Daved Bennett 1 min read

Healthcare updates arrive through agency websites, payer portals, email bulletins, manuals, contract notices, code-set releases, and professional organizations. A short monthly review helps teams separate items that require action from general industry news.

Review a consistent source list

  • Federal and state agencies relevant to the organization.
  • Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial payer bulletins.
  • Contract amendments and provider-manual revisions.
  • Code-set, edit, fee-schedule, and coverage-policy updates.
  • Security, privacy, accessibility, and technology notices.

Classify each update

Record whether an item is informational, proposed, final, urgent, or awaiting clarification. Capture its effective date, affected workflows, responsible owner, source link, training needs, and validation plan. Keep superseded versions when they explain decisions made for earlier dates of service.

Close the loop

At the next review, confirm that assigned changes were configured, communicated, tested, and documented. Escalate ambiguous items rather than turning an unverified interpretation into production guidance.

Starting point: CMS publishes official education and updates through the Medicare Learning Network. Add the primary sources that apply to your organization, services, payers, and jurisdictions.
