Mental Health Screenings: Why Primary Care Visits Now Include Them

More primary care providers are screening for depression and anxiety at routine visits — here is why.

It’s increasingly common to be handed a short questionnaire about mood and anxiety at a routine check-up. This isn’t incidental — it reflects a broader shift in care.

Why now

Research continues to show that mental and physical health are closely linked, and primary care is often the first point of contact for issues that would otherwise go unaddressed.

What happens with the results

A positive screen doesn’t mean a diagnosis — it typically opens a conversation and, if needed, a referral to a specialist.

If your provider hasn’t brought this up, it’s a reasonable thing to raise yourself.
